Tips for Using a Weighted Vest
Getting Started with Your Weighted Vest
A weighted vest can be a wonderful sensory tool for children with autism or ADHD. Here are some practical tips to help you get the most out of it.
How Long Should Your Child Wear It?
Start with short sessions of 20–30 minutes and observe how your child responds. Many occupational therapists recommend a "20 minutes on, 20 minutes off" schedule. Always follow the guidance of your child's OT.
Getting the Right Fit
The vest should fit snugly but not restrict movement or breathing. The weight should be distributed evenly across the front and back panels.
How Much Weight to Use
A general guideline is 10% of your child's body weight, but always consult your occupational therapist for personalised advice.
When to Use the Vest
- During homework or focused tasks
- Before or after transitions
- During sensory-seeking behaviour
- As part of a sensory diet recommended by your OT
Signs It's Working
Look for increased focus, calmer behaviour, and reduced sensory-seeking. Every child is different — monitor and adjust as needed.
Care & Maintenance
Always remove the weights before washing. Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle. Air dry to maintain the vest's shape and integrity.
